SEASON 1 | EPISODE 10
Hello and welcome to Brazilian English Podcast, I’m your host and teacher Derek Noble and in this podcast we talk about Brazilian culture and entertainment to help Brazilian students of English reach fluency in English and also to spread our values and beliefs worldwide. Every episode is full of rich vocabulary for all levels of English and also full of content related to a universe that, as we know, is enormous and interesting: I’m talking about Brazilian culture.
Yo, guys, what’s up? how do you do? Today, I bring you the news of the week in Brazil. Only the regular ones, ok? I don’t mean to sensationalize it. I don’t work for the yellow press1. Most news companies in Brazil distort2 and exaggerate the news to create sensations and attract readers. I don’t do this, okay?
That stated, let me report the most relevant news of last week in Brazil.
National Geographic has announced it will shoot3 a videobiography of Brazilian cartoonist Mauricio de Souza. He is the creator of many characters that have helped develop and educate the imagination of many Brazilians in the last 60 years. Do you remember Jimmy Five and his stylish4 hair? What is your favourite character of Monica’s Gang?
In the film, Mauricio de Souza talks to Fabio Porchat about what happened in his life from his reporter days to the building of Monica’s theme park. According to National Geographic, his company Maurício de Souza Studios has published one billion magazines and it represents 80% of comic books sales in Brazil. Currently, its newest successful release is Monica Teen, a manga5 that sold more than 230.000 copies in its first edition. Are you a fan of Turma da Mônica or Monica’s Gang?
Well, let’s see the second article that I prepared for you today, it’s called:
Now, let’s talk about music. On November the 24th, 11 Brazilian cities and even Buenos Aires hosted6 simultaneously the First National Meeting of women in the Samba Circle. The event took place in capitals like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Natal and many others. The project was created by Dorina Samba, who is a samba singer and composer. The idea is to bring attention to the strong presence of women in Samba both current and historical. The legendary Beth Carvalho, aka7 Godmother8 of Samba, chose the opening song of the event. All the collective female samba circles sang “Coisa de pele”, a hit released in 1986. There were also photography exhibitions, customizing workshops and a clothes fair9. Great idea, right?
To finish this episode with more good news, I bring you the story of a remote Brazilian school which won an international prize. The Royal Institute of British Architects awarded a boarding school10 in the state of Tocantins the world’s best new building. This is a school for disadvantaged children in Formoso do Araguaia, in Tocantins. The Children Village dormitory complex provides accommodation for 780 children and it is made mostly from timber11 glued12 together. The project was designed by Gustavo Utrabo and Petro Duschenes with the aid13 of Marcelo Rosenbaum e Adriana Benguela. “We tried to make a new feeling and a contemporary interpretation of the traditional ways of building in this area of Brazil,” Mr Utrabo said to the BBC London. That’s a great idea, don’t you think?
