SEASON 2 | EPISODE 6
Hello and welcome to Brazilian English Podcast, the first podcast to talk about Brazilian culture, 100% in English. I’m your host and teacher Derek Noble, I’m Brazilian, I’m 33 and I have been learning English by myself since I was 10. Well, I created this podcast to help my brazilian students and followers learn English in an interesting and new way. As you learn English, you’re also learning about Brazilian culture, our beautiful country. Well, without any further ado, let’s jump into this episode, right now!
For some time now we have heard the expression ‘’Brazilian Storm1’’. Some people may think it is a climate-related expression or even a political one. In fact, it is related to the Brazilian new generation of surfboarders who have been rocking2 the seas around the world. They are part of the top surfers who participate in the World Championship Tour (WCT).
It all started with Gabriel Medina bringing the WCT Cup3 to Brazil, in 2014. Later in 2015, Mineirinho brought us the world title. Besides the previous two, the world elite of surfers now has Filipe Toledo, Miguel Pupo, Ítalo Ferreira, and Alejo Muniz. These are young men who influence kids and teenagers to become successful athletes. Even though4 surfing is a hard sport to master, these youngsters now have closer models to look up to5.
But it’s not only on the sea that we see Brazilians on board. Brazilian skateboarders have ranked6 for many generations on the top of the world skateboarders’ list. Sérgio Fortunato, aka7 Sérgio Negão, is a living legend: he was one of the first Brazilians to compete in the international skateboard championship and received a prize as the best 80s skateboarder. He popularized the vertical modality in Brazil and at 51, he received a star on the ESPN Hall of Fame.
Another significant name in Brazilian skateboarding is Bob Burnquist. Not for nothing8 may you have heard this name before: he was the first Brazilian to become world champion on vertical modality and the creator of many new skateboarding tricks9. He won the world skateboarding championship 3 times, and also won 8 golden medals on X-Games. He was 7 times10 elected the Best Skateboarder of the year and the first skateboarder to receive the Laureus; the sports Oscar.
